Problem Plants

Girl swimming in Eurasian water milfoil The two main problem plants that we treat are Eurasian watermilfoil and filamentous algae. These problem plants make it difficult to swim, fish and boat in the lakes. Swimmers can become entangled in the weeds and drown. Fishermen get them caught on their lines. Boat motors overheat, causing costly repairs. Sailboats and canoes can't go through the weeds and get stuck. The cause lake water to stagnate. They also create an unattractive shoreline, decreasing property value.

Eurasian water milfoil

Eurasian water milfoil is an invasive, exotic plant species that has taken over lakes throughout North America. It is a submersed, perennial plant that forms colonies in deep waters that move toward the shoreline. In shallow waters, it creates a dense canopy that prevents native aquatic plants from getting sunlight. Eurasian water milfoil spreads quickly through fragmentation of plant tips and root expansion.

Algae

There are two main types of algae found in lakes: filamentous algae and planktonic (floating) algae. Planktonic algae cannot be successfully treated because of its mobility; if it is treated, more algae just floats into the area. Filamentous algae, however, can be more affectively treated since it is less mobile than planktonic algae.
