Treatment Details

Our treatments provide summer-long control of Eurasian water milfoil, filamentous algae, and other weeds that are not protected by the DNR. We use herbicides that have been registered for use in lakes by EPA and the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection to treat the weeds. Studies conducted by the UW-Zoology department have shown no direct toxicity to fish by the products used. The treatments are performed by Marine Biochemists and supervised by DNR staff, using only properly licensed products. The treated area can extend 100 ft out from your shoreline.

Treatments are generally performed during the 1st and 2nd week of June, when the weeds are growing and the water is warm enough for the herbicide to work properly. The DNR decides when the treatments will occur each year. It is necessary for the water to be calm with low to moderate wind conditions for the application to take place. Clean Lakes Associates will post the treatment dates on the web site once the dates have been finalized with the DNR. We will also have a recording on our phone (608) 221-1156. If you provided an email address on your order form, we will notify you through email when the treatments will take place.

You must display your Dane County pier code number or your name and address on your pier so it is clearly visible from the spray boat. Otherwise, the DNR will not allow treatment in front of your property. Pier codes can be obtained from your local municipal office, or if you received a mailing from us, your pier code can be found above your address on the mailer if one has been assigned by Dane County.

We will post two signs on your pier following treatment to detail any restrictions. You must keep these signs up for the duration of the waiting period specified on the signs. Fishing and swimming are allowed 24 hours after treatment; however, there may be lawn and irregation watering restrictions normally on some products we use.

Weeds die about 10-14 days after the treatment. One treatment is usually sufficient to eliminate nuisance weeds for the summer. However, if your weeds do not die and the DNR allows another treatment, this will be done at no additional charge. In some rare cases, the DNR won't allow treatment on your property. Last year, over 95% of our customers were treated.
